Course Description  :

The course focuses specifically on the study of speech sounds in the English language. It aims at understanding the phonetic system of English in order to help the students to become effective   communicators in the language.

In this module, students will learn about the different types of English speech sounds, including vowels, consonants, and diphthongs. They will also study the rules governing their use in English pronunciation, including stress, intonation, and syllable structure. Through guided practice and analysis of recorded speech samples, students will develop their ability to produce and recognize different English speech sounds accurately.

Prerequisites

Some of the potential prerequisites for the phonetics module include:

      - Familiarity with the English language: First-year students should have a good command of the English language, including fluency in spoken and written English. This will assist them to develop their perception and recognition of common English speech sounds in preparation for the phonetics module.

      - Basic knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary: Students should have basic knowledge of English grammar, syntax and vocabulary. This will enhance the ability to understand and produce speech sounds in the English language.      

      - Attention to detail: Students should have excellent attention to detail and a keen ear, enabling them to distinguish between different speech sounds accurately. This will help them present an accurate phonemic representation of utterances with the precise IPA the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)symbols as well as a phonetic transcription with the adequate use of diacritics.


Course  Objectives :

By the end of the Speaking and Listening course, students will be able to:

●      Demonstrate improved speaking skills, including pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary usage, and coherence.

●      Utilize effective communication strategies in different speaking contexts, such as presentations, group discussions, and debates.

●      Analyze and interpret various types of spoken discourse, including dialogues, lectures, interviews, and authentic materials.

●      Develop active listening skills, including comprehension of main ideas, supporting details, and inferred meanings.

●      Engage in critical thinking and analysis of spoken English, including identifying context clues and cultural aspects embedded in listening materials.

●      Utilize appropriate listening strategies to comprehend academic lectures, discussions, and presentations.
